TOPIC:  MEANING,  RELEVANCE AND SCOPE OF VIRTUAL LABORATORY AND VIRTUAL DISSECTION

INTRODUCTION

                              Virtual lab is a project initiated by the ministry of human resource development , Government of India , under the national mission on education through information and communication technology . The project aims to provide remote – access to laboratories in various disciplines of science and engineering for students at all levels from under graduate to research.

                     Virtual dissection table produced by anatomage company is reputed for the advanced hardware and refined computational algorithm to handle three- dimensional volume models . Another discriminative factor , compared to its competitors , is that the table includes visible Korean sectioned images of a male cadaver comprising high resolution and real color. The VK outlined images have successively been applied to the table , enabling identification of hundreds of structures on the volume models.

VIRTUAL LABORATORY

                Virtual labs is a project initiated by the ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, under the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology . The project aims to provide remote – access to laboratories in various disciplines of science and engineering for students at all levels from under graduate to research.

               It also intends to develop a complete learning management system where the students can avail the various tools for learning , including additional web – resources , video – lectures , animated demonstration and self evaluation. There is also a component where in costly equipment and resources are shared, which are otherwise available to only a limited number of users due to constraints on time and geographical distances.

              Seven IIT’S (Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee, Guwahati), IIT Hyderabad, Amrita University ,Dayalbagh University , NIT Karnataka and college of Engineering , Pune are the instituitions participating in the project.

            The project intends to cover physical sciences, chemical science and various branches of engineering like electronics and communication, computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, biotechnology engineering, and civil engineering.

        The definition of a virtual laboratory – A virtual laboratory is one where the student interacts with an experiment or activity which is intrinsically remote from the student or which has no immediate physical reality. The latter part of this definition may seem to imply that a virtual laboratory can have no physical reality behind it at all. For example, in a simulation of gravity we might code for behavior different to the familiar inverse square law (if only to explore the consequences of such a” universe”). We will see however, that this need not be the case, and indeed as we shall see, the whole concept of the interactive screen experiment is to bring as close a connection to reality as possible, to as many student as possible , to the virtual laboratory.

THE COMPONENT OF VIRTUAL LAB ARE DETERMINED TO HAVE THE FOLLOWING

1.      Lab sets and equipments

        The virtual lab is considered integral to the traditional lab but not an alternative to it. The existence of the traditional lab is very necessary.

2.      Computer devices

          They are represented in personal computers which are linked to the local net or to the International net so that the student can work directly in the lab or distantly at anywhere and any time

3.      Communication network and the related hardware

         In case of performing experiments electronically, all the sets should be linked to the computer, because the link between the users with lab will be through communication.

4.      The programs of the virtual lab

       These programs are represented in the simulation programs, which are designed by professional. It is necessary to design this program in an interesting and attractive form.

5.      Co operation programs and management

         These programs are concerned with the method of managing the lab and the ones who perform the experiment, including students and researchers.

6.      Technical staff

         It is important to have a technical team to support educators in prepairing and assessing scientific material.

MERITS

1.      Creating new intellectual model in education better than the real, and more beautiful then the imagination.

2.      Knowledge – building and inculcate information .

3.      Encouraging and guiding students.

4.      Reducing the learning time spent in the traditional lab.

VIRTUAL DISSECTION

                Virtual dissection table produced by anatomage company is reputed for the advanced hardware and refined computational algorithm to handle three dimensional volume models. Another discriminative factor, compared to its competitors, is that the table includes visible Korean (VK) sectioned images of a male cadaver comprising high resolution and real color. The VK outlined images have successively been applied to the table .enabling identification of hundreds of structures on the volume models . Meanwhile, the VK team produced 3D surface models with the same data .The surface models were put into the portable document format file which can be opened on Adobe Reader Version 9. Additional software was elaborated to browse the 2- dimensional sectioned and outlined images. Both have been distributed gratis on VK website. The purpose of this research is to inform people, interested in the digital human anatomy , of the compensatory relationship between the table and the free software. We compared the function and usage environment of these two systems, and researched the possibility to manufacture  other virtual reality anatomy programs.

CONCLUSION

Virtual lab as a simulated interaction encompassing the contribution of technology , educational theory and individual human influence. Specific to the scientific community, participants in virtual labs manipulate virtual tools and or systems to perform experiments on a computer generated program that can be accessed locally or via the internal. Virtual interactive experience provide a solid foundation which enables enhanced skill development while at the same retraining student interest in the topic. Virtual dissection table produced by Anatomage company is reputed for the advanced hardware and refined computational algorithm to handle three – dimensional volume models.
