TEST FOR STARCH
AIM
To detect the presence of starch in the given sample
solution.
MATERIAL REQUIRED
Sample
starch solution (prepared by dissolving a pinch of starch powder in the boiling
water or rice water can be used), iodine solution, test tube, test tube holder,
spirit lamp etc.
Preparation of reagent
Lugol iodine solution
Potassium iodide -2g
Iodine crystal -1g
Distilled water -100ml
IODINE TEST
PROCEDURE
Take
1ml of the sample solution to be tested in a dry test tube. Add a few drops of iodine solution to the sample
solution and mix it well.
OBSERVATION
The solution will turn dark blue.
INFERENCE
The dark blue colour of
the solution indicates the presence of starch as confirmed in the given
solution starch react with iodine in presence of iodine to form an intensely
blue coloured complex while is visible at very low cone of iodine.
