DISPLAY THE MOUTH PARTS OF COCKROACH

AIM

       To mount the mouth parts of cockroach on a glass slide.

Material required

    Cockroach, slide ,needle, forceps and glycerine.

Procedure

Take a live cockroach and hold it on by first finger and second finger of left hand so that its ventral side faced the second finger and its dorsal side faces the first finger. Stretch the antennae using the second finger. Lift the labrum (upper lip) and scratch it using forceps. Insert a needle to loose the labium (lower lip) and scratch it. Then find out  the basal segment of the maxilla and remove it carefully using forceps . In the same method remove the mandible and hypopharynx.

DISPLAY AND MOUNTING

Remove the unwanted flesh attached   to the mouthparts, using forceps and needle. Take a clean slide and smear glycerine or water and arrange the mouth parts as shown in the figure.
