TEXTBOOK
A textbook is a book used for the
study of a
subject. People use a textbook to learn facts & methods about a
certain subject. Textbooks sometimes have questions to test the knowledge &
understanding of the learner.
QUALITIES OF A GOOD SCIENCE TEXTBOOK
1.
The author: A good
science textbook is judged , at face , by the author his qualification & experience.
2. Mechanical
features of the textbook :
i.
The print & the paper used & the binding of the textbook should be attractive. It should be
hard & durable.
ii.
The printing should be clear, legible , &
appropriately used.
iii.
The book should be well- illustrated with diagrams
, sketches & pictures.
iv.
The size of the print , the language &
experiments discussed should suit the child & standard of the child.
3. The
subject matter – its nature & organisation
i.
The subject
matter should be developed as far
as possible in psychological sequence.
ii.
There should be consistency of the
subject matter & the textbook should satisfy the objectives of science teaching.
iii.
Each chapter should begin
with a brief
introduction & end with a summary.
iv.
Subject matter should lead to the inculcation of scientific attitudes , discipline & cultural values.
v.
Each chapter
should contain assignments at the
end.
vi.
Headings &
sub headings should be in bold letters.
vii.
Each textbook should contain detailed table of contents & an index.
viii.
The language of the textbook should be simple, clear , lucid , scientific &
precise. The english equivalents of the
terms should be given in brackets.
ix. The
textbook should be given from local
environment & from life experiences.
x. The textbook should give suggestions for improving
scientific apparatus.
xi. The whole content of the textbook should be aimed at shaping the integrated modern outlook which ensures success in mastering the scientific knowledge & solution of the problem.
